Freezing Oocytes Embryos

Ooctyes are unfertilized eggs while embryos are fertilized eggs. The process of cyropreservation allows a woman’s eggs (ooctyes) or embryos to be frozen and stored for later use. Ooctyes need to be extracted from a woman before being stored for later use. Ooctyes or unfertilized eggs are retreived, fertilized with sperm and then the resulting embryos are frozen and stored.

You may want to consider freezing your eggs if:

● You are undergoing a medical condition that can affect your fertility. For instance, many women diagnozed with cancer prefer to freeze their eggs before cancer treatment begins

● You do not have any plans to have a baby right now due to certain commitments and want to freeze your eggs for future.

● You may want to benefit from optimum egg viability for future use

● You may be exposed to the risk of an injury or death and may want to freeze your eggs

Is Embryo Freezing For You?

You may want to opt for embryo freezing if:

● You are undergoing IVF treatment and would prefer storing embryos for future IVF cycles

● Due to certain complications, your IVF treatment needs to be cancelled after the egg retreival

● If you are undergoing medical treatment that might impact your fertility

Egg Freezing Process

Freezing eggs undergoes a similar procedure as for IVF. Our doctors will guide and counsel you for any queries and concerns you may have. We will explain the complete process to you and help you at every stage.

● Initially we would screen you for infectious diseases including HIV, hepatitis B and C

● In order to extract the eggs, you would need to typically follow the initial steps of the IVF procedure. It takes approximately 4 to 6 weeks to complete the egg freezing cycle

● When the eggs are retrieved they are added into a freezing solution to protect them in their frozen state

● The eggs are frozen through vitrification, which means they are quickly freezed and stored in liquid nitrogen tanks

Embryos Freezing Process

Our doctors guide and counsel you with the process of freezing the embryos. We explain the complete procedure to you and also take your consent on how long you would want the embryos to be stored for.

● Before freezing the embryos, your partner and you will be screened for any kind of diseases including HIV, hepatitis B and C

● Through IVF or ICSI, the embryos are created. Only the suitable ones will be frozen and stored.

● The embryos are first freezed and then stored in nitrogen liquid. Cryoprotectant is used to protect the embryos during the freezing process

● In the standard freezing process, the embryos are slowly made to freeze at -196 degrees celsius. Another procedure that has gained prominence is vitrification. This is a faster process through which the embryo is solidified into glass-like without causing any harm to the formation of ice crystals

How long oocytes/embryos can be stored for?

The standard storing period for both eggs (oocytes) and embryos are approximately 10 years. Only in certain circumstances this duration can be extended.

Risks associated with freezing of Eggs and Embryos

Since fertility medication is administered before retrieving the eggs, therefore, you may experience hot flushes, headaches and restlessness to these drugs. It is also possible that not all frozen eggs and embryos will survive. Some embryos might lose a cell or two in the process of freezing and thawing.
